Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages via the medium of art. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still at university. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house of one of jury. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. In this role, she launched her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
